With the growth and success of our Let’s Talk project, we are excited to have expanded our range of early years settings in which we are carrying out its activities.

Our early years settings; local nurseries, pre-schools and childminders that provide services for 0-4 year olds now proudly include Cockleshell Day Nursery in Kursaal and Ready Teddy Go pre-school in West Shoebury.

The Let’s Talk project activities include support for the practitioners and parents regarding their interaction with the children (e.g. top tips/targets set on how best to develop children’s language and communication skills), the 10-week Elklan training course 0-3s (for the setting’s chosen ‘Communication Champion’) as well as the opportunity to learn about Wellcomm screening and how to screen the children in their setting.

Through our close liaison with the Southend Borough Council Early Years Team, it was highlighted that some early years settings may need our immediate support and we are excited to be able to assist.

Lynsey Weston, Specialist Early Years Teacher at A Better Start Southend, explains; “With some of the existing settings we have been supporting now requiring a ‘lighter touch’, and less assistance, we are delighted we are able to add a couple more to our current list.”

We will continue to support our current early years settings in the ABSS areas:

Little Stars Southend
Little Stars Shoebury
Elim
Sandpiper
Little Fishes
Humpty Dumpty
Childminder: Tracene King

In addition to this, The Fatherhood Institute, who are running our FRED project are hoping to work uniquely with some of the remaining ABSS Early Years settings that we have yet to reach and we are also looking to collaborate and jointly work with FRED with some of our existing settings so that they get joint input from both FRED and from the Communications and Language team.
