The start of 2018 has seen the start of our stay-and-play style Talking Walk-In for parents or carers with any concerns about their child’s speech, language or communication skills.

The monthly sessions allow children to play and interact with others in a relaxed environment while parents meet with a specialist Speech and Language Therapist for information and advice.

The Walk Ins have been set up to make sure that children are getting correct support, tailored to their individual specific needs. Parents are signposted to the relevant course or are provided with the relevant support appropriate for their child.

Each session will take place in one of the four children’s centres in the ABSS areas (Cambridge Road, Centre Place, Friars and Summercourt). For each Walk In, our friendly team are on hand to give tips to parents on developing their child’s language and communication skills at home and give them information about our Let’s Talk courses for parents and children.

The Walk Ins will last either one hour or two hours and there will be a maximum limit for the number of parents who can be seen, so it is important to book in advance.

The first session at Cambridge Road in mid-January proved a success, with 22 parents booked onto the session, with all being seen by the Specialist Speech and Language Therapists and Therapy Assistants on hand to advise. The session also enjoyed a high percentage of new parents in attendance, with walk-ins expected to see our speech and language team reach a high percentage of new children and parents.
