A BBC TV lead news piece featuring A Better Start Southend, including interviews with our Director Jeff Banks and Parent Champion Kayleigh, aired at the end of February, shining a light on the work the programme is doing with the help of our Partners, local parents and the wider community.

The news item, which featured as the top story of the BBC Look East evening news programme on 27th February, was part of a piece looking in to the funding challenges for children’s services. As part of this, the piece investigated the innovative approach of A Better Start Southend, and how it achieves better results for children and families by working with Partners in health, education, social care and beyond, as well as, importantly, parents and the wider community. This collaborative work allows us to develop new test and learn services that have the potential to be replicated more widely.

“A Better Start Southend is bringing together organisations working in health, education and social care alongside the community and families […] those people that we want to support, to really find the most creative and imaginative ways of developing new services, to test and learn new approaches.” Jeff Banks, Director, A Better Start Southend

“To be a parent, sometimes it can be [isolating], it depends on the situation, but with all the services that are available now, it’s not as isolating as it has been.”
Kayleigh Wilkins, Parent Champion

The piece, which you can see at the top of the page, or here featured our Director Jeff Banks, and Parent Champions Kayleigh, Jayne and her son. Including a three and a half minute interview by BBC Look East presenter Suzie Fowler-Watt with Jeff, the section also featured an interview by reporter Leigh Milner with Parent Champion Kayleigh at our Alexandra Street location. In addition, the programme featured clips with Councillor Helen Boyd from Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, Family Action’s Melissa Cullingham, local parent Kirsty Cleal as well as Matthew Dodd from the National Children’s Bureau.
