Our Work Skills project, run by our partners Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, is teaming up with enterprise agency Nwes to host free business skills workshops every Thursday morning throughout September. The aim is to inspire parents and prospective parents in the ABSS wards to start their own business.

The free Intro2Enterprise workshops will take place at Centre Place Children’s Centre on the Kursaal Estate, covering the basics of running a business, how to access finance, the essentials of marketing, and how to gain and retain customers. There will also be a start-up market place, where attendees can talk to organisations, business owners and specialists about a variety of issues, including Trading Standards, tax, legal models, employing people, and insurance.

Previous Work Skills workshops have had a real impact on supporting local parents by encouraging them back into further education. Over an eight month period, 17 workshops have been delivered, with 127 places filled.

In addition to workshops, the project has previously held several successful events offering parents in the area new opportunities, including learning about the benefits of paid employment and life in the hotel and hospitality industry, in partnership with Holiday Inn Southend. A number of industry visits have also taken place, including to the luxury restaurant Bourgee, and the Cliffs Pavilion in Southend, which have resulted in actual jobs for parents. The family friendly jobs and the benefits they bring help children in the ABSS wards get a better start in life.

Amir Girnary, Skills Project Officer with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council Work Skills project says:

“The ABSS Work Skills Intro2Enterprise workshops are purposefully designed to encourage, inspire, and build confidence in parents who wish to start up their own business. Attendees have the chance to open the door to opportunity and put their ideas into practice. It is a real chance for them to turn their skills, talent and passion into a viable business.”

Delivered by Nwes, England’s largest not-for-profit enterprise agency, the workshops will draw upon their wealth of knowledge and expertise. Already with a strong presence in the county, Nwes have welcomed the opportunity to reach out to parents in Southend.

Gillian Austen, Area Manager for Nwes says:

“Southend is a hotbed of ideas and innovation, and Nwes is delighted to be delivering these workshops specifically for parents of young children.”

“We support hundreds of people throughout our region each year, and many of these are parents who wish to improve their career and earning potential to make a better life for their family. The Intro2Enterprise workshops are a fantastic opportunity for parents in Southend to be inspired to make that change.”

The free Intro2Enterprise workshops will be held weekly every Thursday morning throughout September, and although it is not essential to attend all four sessions, it is designed as a complete course.
