The Hinguar Connecting Parents project, commissioned by A Better Start Southend and developed in partnership with Blade Education and Hinguar Primary and Nursery School, has been exploring how film, social media and technology can support parents and children in preparing for that big first day at school.

The community-led online project aims to improve the home-school partnership, by giving parents an insider view of classroom life and a wide range of information to help prepare their child for nursery and reception class. The programme includes a great series of online videos for parents and children on getting ready for school, covering topics like choosing the right shoes, toilet training and the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.

The online videos are proving to be really popular with parents and in a recent survey 96% said they had learnt more about the early years classes by watching them. We’re currently evaluating the project to gather evidence on what has worked best, and why, so that other children and parents at other schools in the area can benefit too.

After watching the videos, Hinguar parents and carers said:

“We really enjoyed viewing and finding out things we take for granted with regard to starting school. [My son] enjoyed taking part, too. We’d love to see more of these.”

“As a grandparent sometimes modern school life seems a bit daunting. This [website] was easy to access and is really useful to make sure I can support my grandson’s learning. Is there going to be any more?”
