Research shows that when breastfeeding support is offered to women throughout their infant feeding journey, they tend to breastfeed for longer and more exclusively.

At A Better Start Southend, our Group-based Breastfeeding Support service, recently named ‘Bump to Breast’ and delivered by the Southend YMCA, offers weekly group support sessions for mothers within A Better Start areas. Mothers are welcome to attend both antenatally as well as postnatally. The groups offer support for mothers who are combi-feeding, as well as those exclusively breastfeeding and we encourage attendees to bring along family members and friends too.

From the start of November, the groups will be held in new locations across the A Better Start Southend wards. It is hoped the change to the venues allow breastfeeding mothers and their families to access a group within their ward.

Take a look at the new venues and dates below:

  • Mondays 10.30am-12.30pm: Southend YMCA Eco-Hub, 2a St John’s Road, Westcliff, SS0 7JZ
  • Mondays 2pm-4pm: Cambridge Road Children’s Centre, 40-42 Cambridge Road, Southend, SS1 1EB
  • Wednesdays 10am-12noon: Friars Children’s Centre, Shoeburyness, SS3 9XX

Our extensive breastfeeding offer also includes The Midwifery 1-2-1 Breastfeeding Support Service, running in partnership with Southend University Hospital Foundation Trust. The service enables mothers to receive one to one support from a trained midwife during their breastfeeding journey.

Initially rolled out as a test-and-learn project for mothers identified during pregnancy or in the postnatal period in the Shoeburyness and West Shoebury wards, the service has now been further rolled out to include families in the Kursaal ward too, allowing more families to access this fantastic support facility!

The sessions focus on areas such as positioning and attachment, as well as allowing mothers to learn more about safe parenting, relationship building and brain development in young children. Partners and families are welcome to attend the sessions, and can find out how to best support throughout the breastfeeding period.
