At A Better Start Southend we know local people can make great things happen. We are investing over ten years to improve the lives of Southend’s very youngest residents; and we’re working with local people every step of the way.

Our new Community Ideas and Development Fund – which launched on Monday and will be open for applications from the 28th September – enables community-led change. It helps support community groups, organisations and individuals who have a great idea about how to make lives better for Southend’s young children and their families. There are two channels of funding available for applicants to bid through. The Seed Fund; for projects applying up to £5,000, this channel provides a smaller pot of funding to aid Southend partnerships in addressing specialised needs within our community to be addressed. The Grow Fund helps projects who are applying for up to £10,000 to work across multiple A Better Start Southend communities to solve challenges that have affected families within our wards for years.

To inform this new fund, we have taken valuable learning from the Resilience, Ideas and Innovation Fund which we launched last year. The CID Fund will replace the RIIF, and with a brand new process and two channels of funding to bid for, it will make it even easier for individuals, organisations and voluntary groups to move through the process, and implement their ideas into the community.

In order to be awarded funding, applicants must formulate a bid that is innovative and creative, builds partnership working, stimulates long term sustainability, delivers to families within our wards, and helps to meet the A Better Start Southend strategic outcomes.

The total budget for the Community Ideas and Development Fund is £60,000 a year for the next 3 years; £20,000 has been allocated to the Seed Fund and £40,000 has been allocated to the Grow Fund. Organisations will be funded for 1 year with an option to extend funding subject to need, development and success.
