Programme Delivery Service

The Programme Delivery Service project is a multi-layered project being delivered by Family Action. The exciting diet and nutrition-focused project includes the Starting Solids workshops, the Food for Life (allotment) programme and Healthy Cooking for Families, as well as assisting in the delivery of FRED and HENRY.

Starting Solids

Starting Solids is a two-hour workshop to provide families with the education and the tools to understand when and how to introduce solid foods to their baby at 6 months old.

Workshops take place at the four children’s centres in ABSS areas: Cambridge Road, Centre Place, Friars and Summercourt. The HENRY organised course helps get your baby off to a great start!

The workshops are run at the four children’s centres in A Better Start Southend areas and will help you decide:

  • When your baby is ready to try solid food
  • What foods to start with
  • When your baby is hungry and when they have had enough
  • How to make meal times an enjoyable experience for both of you

It is only recommended to attend one workshop as the information provided will be repeated for each one – don’t forget that your Health Visitor is an invaluable resource too!

For more information or to book call 01702 220810 (choose option 1).

PLEASE NOTE: Crèche is not provided for the workshops, but you are welcome to attend with your baby.

Food for Life

The Food for Life programme takes place at the purpose-built allotment at Friars Children’s Centre in Shoeburyness.

Weekly sessions for the programme take place at the allotment during the scheduled times (during term-time only) and as well as learning more about how to grow fruit and vegetables, the free, fun 12-week programme will also give families the opportunity to try the food they have grown. There is also even an area for composting food and garden waste.

To find out more information about the 12-week programme call 01702 220810 (select option 2).

From cooking on a budget, to healthy eating and developing basic cooking skills, the informative sessions are for those who are looking to learn more about eating and preparing nutritious food together as a family.
