The most colourful member of the A Better Start Southend team has been officially named at a naming ceremony event at the excellent TWENTY ONE venue by Southend’s seafront. Following suggestions sent in by the general public and voting from the selected top six options, the name chosen for the new A Better Start Southend mascot is…Pip!

Colourful, fun, unique and child-friendly, Pip is a fun and entertaining way of introducing the fantastic work of A Better Start Southend to the public, helping introduce families to the different projects and activities we do.

After the mascot was unveiled at the end of last year, the one thing that it was missing was a name. Suggestions for a suitable name were sent in by the general public, and the ABSS Mascot Group (including Parent Champions who have driven the project every step of the way) chose the top six from the many options that were put forward. Pip was then chosen by the public from well over 200 votes both online and at our recent family-friendly ‘Who’s the Expert’ conference.

The naming ceremony is just the most recent step in Pip’s life, which has seen wide involvement and engagement with children, families and the general public. Pip was created through a parent-led process, with its look based on the artwork of young children. We had 100 imaginative ideas for the mascot creations made using a range of materials and from these, the ABSS Mascot Group used combinations and themes to select the best four. From the four final options, we had over 1,000 people voting for their favourite mascot design, including at displays at Focal Point Gallery, The Royals Shopping Centre and ASDA in Shoeburyness. Following this, Pip was born!

So look out for Pip at A Better Start Southend activities out and about in Southend and be sure to say hello!
