Southend families showed their generous spirit as they donated their pre-loved baby clothes and items ahead of A Better Start Southend’s fantastic parent engagement activity, ‘Something Old, Something New’. The event took place at SAVS, Alexandra Street at the end of September.

The day, led by our fantastic Parent Champions Tammey Britten, Kirsty Wilson and Kayleigh Wilkins, was funded through the A Better Start Southend Engagement Fund, and gave families experiencing financial challenges within the Victoria, Milton and Westborough wards the opportunity to receive a wish-list of donated children’s clothes, toys and equipment. Additionally, families had access to professional advice around pregnancy, their child’s speech and language skills, healthy living for all the family, as well as information around work and benefits. All unused items were donated to hostels and mother and baby units.

Parent Champions initially applied to the Engagement Fund in order to finance the event after enduring tough circumstance themselves, and decided to provide a one-off service to other parents who may be experiencing a similar situation. The day proved to be very successful, and saw 28 families coming together to support one another, including six families who were new to the A Better Start programme! Kirsty Wilson, Parent Champion for Victoria ward said: “The event could not have gone better. It was a very humbling experience being able to help so many families and relieve at least a little part of their stress.”

We have an extensive calendar of parent-led engagement events for children and families living within the six wards to get involved in: https://abetterstartsouthend.co.uk/events/
