A global themed celebration of ‘The Bear Who Stared’ by Duncan Beedie – in six different languages!

Our introduction to the book began when our Talking Transitions team, led by Lynsey Weston and Sian Ansell, organised a ‘Chat-a-long Read-a-thon’ week-long storytelling event where over fifty Early Years providers were invited to share the story at their settings, as part of our Festival of Conversations during October 2022.

The aim was to promote the love of reading and storytelling using imaginative props and to encourage discussions about the themes of the book. The story is an illustrated children’s book about a bear who learns how to communicate.

To capture the activities of the week, readers were invited to take homemade video footage of their readings in action. To develop the storytelling further, the team approached members of the local community to help translate the story into other languages and we worked with the festival videographer for the final edits. An array of people came forward to help and we are excited to be able to share our mini-series of six language versions:

French

Portuguese

Russian

Ukrainian

Welsh

Albanian

Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped to translate the story!

It is an exciting time for the Speech, Communication & Language teams at A Better Start Southend as we are working on the final stages of launching a dedicated web page for the teams which will include recent news and achievements, useful resources, expert information and links. Coming soon!
