The Southend Local Offer

The Southend SEND Local Offer is a dedicated website which gives information about services and support for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) age 0 to 25 and their families in the city of Southend-on-Sea. 

 

This includes things like education, health, transport, leisure activities and how to access help or support. It is designed to help you understand what support you can expect and how you can get it – all in one place on the Council’s LiveWell website.

Southend Early Years SEND Team

The Southend Early Years SEND Support Service is a free and friendly team dedicated to helping families and early years settings support children aged 0-5 years who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). They are ther to ensure that every child gets the right support as early as possible – at home, in nursery or pre-school, or during the transition into school.

 

The team includes experienced SEND advisers and support workers who work closely with parents and carers, nurseries and other professionals who may be involved in your child’s life. They offer personalised support, which may include observing your child at home or in their setting, helping to create Indidivual Support Plans (ISPs), providing guidance on funding options like the Disability Access fund (DLA), and assisting with the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) process. They also offer training for nursery staff, and help support a smooth transition into school.

 

You can be referred to the service by your nursery or a health visitor, or you can reach out to them directory yourself to learn more about the support that might be available for your child.

The Southend Council SEND Team also run friendly, monthly drop-in SEND Surgeries for parent carers. Go along to ask questions and get support and advice about your child.

Southend SEND Independent Forum (SSIF)

Southend SEND Independent Forum (SSIF) are the Parent Carer Forum for SEND families in Southend. They work with the Council, NHS and other partners to represent the voice of parents, carers and their children. They run monthly coffee and chat sessions.

City Family

City Family is a local organisation that takes the good practice from A Better Start Southend (ABSS) and weaves it into their support services for local families. They connect parents and carers to support, services, and community networks, making family life a little easier. Whether you need advice, activities, or access to more specialist support, they can help you. Whatever your journey, you’re not alone.

Stay and Play Groups

There are lots of drop-in play groups in Southend which are specifically for children with additional needs, and they can offer help with accessing support if needed as well. They also enable you to talk to other SEND parents/carers locally:

The Southend Early Years SEND Support Service run some regular stay and play sessions for families, focusing on sensory-rich activities and opportunities to connect with other parents and carers and to link to other professionals.

Chaos & Calm

Provides drop-in play sessions for children with SEND and their families, and offer individual support for families with or without a diagnosis.

Little Heroes ASD Support Group

A parent led support group for families of children who are on the autistic spectrum.

Cake Club

Offers general parenting support and playgroups, including a SEND group.

A group is for children with additional needs, where you can also access support with form-filling and care plans

Lighthouse Centre

Offers services for children and young people aged 0-18 years who have neurodevelopmental disorders. It provides a comprehensive assessment service that identified, investigates and assesses their developmental needs and offers appropriately tailored support, interventions, information and advice. Their goal is to support families to help their children reach their potential and be the best version of themselves!

Support children in the early years with special educational needs and disabilities to achieve their full potential. They have a range of useful downloadable information sheets for parents and early years practitioners.

SOS!SEN

A national charity that aims to empower parents and carers of children and young people with SEND to successfully tackle the difficulties they face when trying to secure the right educational provision for their children.

In order to access their services, you have to fill in a registration from, downloadable from their web site. They offer information sheets, 1-1 advice and a free, term-time, national helpline, staffed by a team of volunteers, to offer next step advice and support on questions and issues you may have relating to your child’s SEN provision. Family Lives services are free to access and here to support you with parenting and family challenges. Get one-to-one support through the free helpline on 0808 800 2222, live chat or message via WhatsApp on 07441 444125 to connect with experienced professional family support workers and highly-trained volunteers. Take one of the self-guided online parenting courses to learn skills to help you in your family life
